A standoff with police in Northfield Township ended peacefully today when the man surrendered after about seven hours, authorities said.
The incident began at about 4:30 a.m. when police received a call that a woman in the house, in the 6800 block of Nollar Road near North Territorial Road, had been assaulted. Northfield Police Lt. Tim Greene said the man made threats to kill the woman and described the assault as "life-threatening."
Officers attempted to make contact with the man, who is in his mid-30s, but he refused to exit the house, Greene said. The woman was able to safely make it outside.
By 8:30 a.m., Northfield Township Police requested the state police SWAT team. Members of that team attempted to get the man out using a PA system, flash-bang grenades, and by breaking windows, Greene said.
The man finally walked out on his own at about 11:15 a.m. and surrendered. Greene said police have not recovered a weapon, but are seeking a search warrant to enter the home.
The man is being jailed on charged that could include felonious assault or attempted murder, Greene said. He's expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
Neighbor Terry Cryer said at the scene this morning that he doesn't know the resident of the home.
"It's pretty peaceful out here most of the time," Cryer said. "At least he came to his senses.
Greene said the woman was taken to the hospital, but he did not have information on her condition.
