Capac Suspect on the Run, Considered Armed and Dangerous - Sergeant 4X4 called to Assist Operations
Capac police chief shot in attempted traffic stop; deputy released
Edward L. Cardenas / The Detroit News
CAPAC -- Authorities breached the home of a suspect they say shot the Capac police chief and a sheriff's
deputy Wednesday afternoon during an attempted traffic stop and failed to find the man, whom they believe
is on the run and armed and dangerous. Authorities entered the home Wednesday evening after the
suspect had barricaded himself inside following the shooting.
Police Chief Raymond Hawks had been listed in serious condition in Port Huron Hospital after he was shot
about 3 p.m. in the village. He was listed in serious condition following surgery, police said Wednesday
night. St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputy Tim O'Boyle was treated and released after being grazed in the
head during the shooting outside the suspect's home.
Hawks and a deputy from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office were shot at about 3 p.m. in the village.
Hawks was involved in a car chase with a suspect, who pulled into the driveway of a home on William G
Street, police said. Hawks then requested help from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office.
As the deputy and a tow truck arrived at the house, the suspect exited and started firing a weapon, police
said.
The suspect shot Hawks twice, striking him in the chest area at least once and grazing the deputy's head.
The wrecker driver then attended to both of the downed officers.
Police believe the suspect retreated into the home.
St. Clair County Sheriff Dan Lane said that Chief Hawks is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.
The deputy, a 25-year veteran of the department, was treated for a gunshot graze to the head and is
expected to be released from the hospital tonight.
Meantime, multiple police agencies have deployed around the house and have been unsuccessful in
contacting the suspect, who has been unresponsive.
The suspect is the owner of the home and police say his wife is not in the home.
The current condition of the officers is unknown, said St. Clair County Sheriff Dan Lane. Officials are notreleasing the wounded deputy's identity."My deputy was sitting up and talking," Lane said.
The suspect is well known to Hawks and the Capac Police Department and he has several prior run-ins
with officers.
